Adolescence is the period of development from childhood to adulthood. It occurs at different times for different individuals. Some children begin adolescence at the age of nine or ten years. The average starting age for this period is around eleven or twelve years.
Many changes occur during this period. These changes in both boys and girls include the following:
1. sudden increase in height and weight
2. growth of short hairs in the armpit and sex organ
3. appearance of pimples
The following are the changes experienced by boys:
1. broadening of the shoulders and narrowing of the hips and waist
2. enlargement of the "Adam's apple"
3. start of wet dreams
4. growth of the mustache
5. development of muscles in the arms and thighs
6. circumcision
The following are the changes experienced by girls:
1. widening of the hips and narrowing of the waist
2. development of the breasts
3. beginning of menstruation
4. disappearance of baby fat
