Handicapped Children

Families having handicapped children face many serious problems. Normality, intelligence and emotion are some factors that handicapped children are lesser of these. Parents are not only consulted about their educational conditions but also they may examine and challenge all relevant records their child and the handicap.

Mental Retardation – It is significantly subaverage general intellectual functioning existing concurrently with deficits in adaptive behavior manifested during the developmental period.

A. Classification IQ Score: Prevalence Mental Age Achieved

1. Mild 50-55-70 80% 8-12 years old
2. Moderate 35-40-50-55 12% 3-7 years old
3. Severe 20-25-35-40 7% <3 years old
4. Profound <20-25 L <1% <3 years old


B. Etilogy:

1. Post-natal brain damage
2. Environmental influences
3. Gestational Disorder
4. Metabolic or Nutritional Disturbance
5. Trauma or Physical agents
6. Infectious or Chemical agents
7. Chromosomal Disturbances
8. Others

C. Assessment Data:

1. General History
2. Behavioral Signs
3. Evidence of Diagnostic Examinations

D. Treatment

1. No definite treatment that will cure MR
2. Supportive care


E. Caregiver Intervention
1. Break learning task into small portions
2. Family support
3. Encourage child’s development through developmental milestone, appropriate
simulation and toy selection
