Reading Readiness

This is the period of getting ready for maturing period. Writers agree that following factors contribute to readiness:

1. Physical factors

This is the ability of the child to see words clearly. Learning to read needs concentration as well as effort which can be easily attained to a child whose physical condition is good. A child with poor vision or is handicapped can’t manifest readiness in reading but it can be overcome in a possible way. In addition, hearing too must be good.

2. Intelligence and mental factors

Learning to read involves the acquisition, recognition and the interpretation of abstract symbols. The child must possess abilities to distinguish likeness and differences and a good memory span.

3. Social and emotional factors

All children face problems in learning. Therefore, is the child has this problem in learning, fear, distaste, inferiority develop. That is why, learning should be associated in an atmosphere that helps the child to grow emotionally and socially.

4. Personality factors and experience background

Home conditions, interest in reading, abilities, breath of experience and many wide experiences are beneficial for the child to fully develop his reading skills.

5. Language factor

Fluent speech and ability to tell a story in connected form contribute to reading readiness.

6. Educational factor

This shows improvements as the child gains increased mastery of oral language, as he understands more about persons, places and things, etc.
