Way back in 1675, it was on a hill which is above the kings palace at Greenwich which is the Royal Observatory was founded. It was on the last century that in order to determine time, a new telescope was installed. The meridian was fixed 0 degree on which the telescope was situated. Thus, this made as accepted that this meridian is known as the "Prime Meridian" which all other lines of longitude are measured east or west of Greenwich that was in the year 1884.
