The Gateway of India is great archway on the waterfront of the port of Bombay, in western India.
India's British rulers built the Gateway to mark a royal event. This was a visit to India in 1911 by King George V and Queen Mary. At that time, the British sovereign was also the emperor of India.
Its architect built the Gateway of India as a kind of mighty triumphal arch, a type of building made famous long before by the Roams. But he designed its arches and towers in the Indian Gujarat style of the 16th century.
It seemed fitting to erect the Gateway of India in Bombay. Under the British, this port on Arabian Sea had grown into the main port of arrival for ships sailing to India from Europe and North America. Its deep-water harbor, protected by islands, has helped to make Bombay one of Asia's great cities.

That is why, when it comes to windows and the appropriate things for it, I always secure it has exterior shutters because they serve as the protection from window breakings.
Indeed, things at home need to be secured and in the right place. Just like everything that it takes, it needs the right tool for it.

The coldest temperatures are recorded in winter in Antarctica. In July 1983, Russian scientists measured a new record low of -89.2 degree Celsius.
Until modern weather stations were set up in Antarctica, the coldest temperatures were recorded in Siberia: -68 degree Celsius was recorded at Verkhoyansk in 1892. Verkhoyansk holds the record for experiencing the greatest temperature range: from a coldest winter temperature of -68 degree Celsius to a hottest summer temperature of 36.7 degree Celsius.
The Arctic "cold pole" is some way from the North Pole because of the surrounding Arctic Ocean. Seas have a moderating effect on the climate of coastal area. Verkhoyansk is inland form the Arctic Ocean, and a long way from any other sea. The huge land mass of Eurasia heats up quickly in summer to give surprisingly high temperatures even in the far north, but it loses its heat quickly in winter.

This depends on how you measure a country's wealth. One way is to work out the wealth of each person in a country, supposing that all the wealth were shared out equally. Measured in this way, the wealthiest countries are a few Arab states in southwest Asia.
The richest Arab states are those with small populations but huge supplies of valuable oil. Profits from the sale of oil have helped such states to improve their standard of living. Most of these states are on the Persian Gulf.
The states with the most wealth per head of population in the early 1980s were the United Arab Emirates. Altogether these had fewer than one million people. If all wealth were shared equally among their people, in 1980 each person would have had $30,070.

The highest active volcanoes on land are in the Andes, in South America. But even larger volcanoes rise from the floor of the Pacific Ocean and form the islands of Hawaii.
Mauna Loa, on Hawaii, is probably the largest active volcano in the world. It rises 13,681 feet above sea level, but its base is 17,000 feet below sea level. This base is roughly oval in shape: 73 miles long and 53 mile across. So a colossal amount of volcanic materials forms this mountain.
The lava from Hawaiian volcanoes is very liquid and flows for long distances. Mauna Loa erupts about every 3 1/2 years. Kilauea Crater, southeast of the main volcano, is filled with a red-hot lava lake called Halemaumau, "The Fire Pit."
Volcanoes in the Andes reach higher above sea level than Mauna Loa. Ojos del Salada, on the border of Argentina and Chile is 22,589 feet high.

In 1981, an airport at Jeddah in western Saudi Arabia became the world's largest. Two years later, Saudi Arabia completed an even larger airport at the capital, Riyadh.
King Abdul-Aziz International Airport at Jeddah was built mainly to receive the nearly two million Muslim pilgrims who visit Mecca each year.
The airport site covers 45 square miles. There are two main runways and four terminals. The Haj terminal, the world's largest roofed building, covers more than half a square mile. In style, it resembles a cluster of nomads' tents, but it has marble walls and glass-fiber roofs.
In 1983, the even larger King Khaled Airport opened at Riyadh. This also has two runways and four terminals. There is a royal pavilion, as we ll as covered parking for 7,700 cars, and buildings for the people who live and work there.

Atacama is the driest desert. It is hemmed in between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountains. The Andes shut out all winds form the east. Like the other hot deserts of the world, the Atacama lies astride one of the Tropics where air pressure is high. The air descends and is therefore warm and dry. There is little cloud, so the sunny days are intensely hot, but the starry nights can be cold.
The Atacama Desert is exceptionally dry, but rainfall is very low in all desert areas. Cairo, in the eastern Sahara, averages 1.12 inches a year. Bahrain, on the edge of the Arabian Desert, has 3.2 inches. But average rainfall figures for deserts can be confusing: there may be heavy storms on a few days in some years, and almost continuous drought in others.
Not all the dry parts of the earth are also hot. Large areas of Central Asia are sheltered by mountains from any rain-bearing winds. Yet deserts such as the Gobi are very cold in winter. The Polar lands are also very dry - although the moisture that does fall accumulates as snow.

The artificial lake with the greatest area is Lake Volta in Ghana, West Africa. The Bratsk Reservoir on the Angara River in the USSR holds the greatest volume of water in an artificial lake.
In 1965, the Akosombo Dam was completed across the Volta River. The dam is built at the southern end of a gorge and produces hydroelectric power. Lake Volta began to build up behind the dam in the valley of the Volta River and its main headwaters, the Black Volta and the White Volta. Altogether, the lake now covers 3,276 square miles and its shoreline is 4,495 miles long. Villagers had to move from the flooded area to the new shoreline where they began a fishing industry.
Lake Volta is large but fairly shallow. In places, the remains of flooded forests can still be seen. Its total volume is 36 cubic miles - compared to 40 cubic miles for the USSR's Bratcsk Reservoir.
